Cloud-Native vs Lift-and-Shift: Choosing Your Migration Strategy

The cloud migration debate often presents a false binary: lift-and-shift (move as-is) versus cloud-native (re-architect from scratch). In reality, enterprises with multiple workloads should apply different strategies to different applications based on a pragmatic assessment of business value, technical debt, and the cost-benefit of modernisation for each specific workload.

Lift-and-shift is appropriate for stable applications with low change velocity that simply need to move off ageing hardware. The application runs on a virtual machine in Azure exactly as it did on-premises, benefiting from improved infrastructure reliability and disaster recovery without the cost of re-architecture. Re-platforming — adapting the application to use managed services like Azure SQL and App Service — captures more cloud benefit at moderate effort. Full cloud-native re-architecture, using containers, serverless, and managed services, is only justified for applications that will see significant ongoing development and need the scalability, resilience, and deployment velocity that cloud-native patterns provide.
